The Story Behind My Pen Name – Ariel

Posted in Biography, and Personal

Last updated on May 13, 2024

cutmypic(35)How I procured my pen name, Ariel? There is a story behind it. This Knol is a narration of that small incident that happened in my life years back. That paved the way to stick with the name Ariel as my byline.

“Philip how you got your penname, Ariel?  My new friends and followers on social media as well as on my blogs ask this question, for such friends here below I present a small note on that incident that happened years back.  I hope, this will give an answer to that question.

Have a blessed day.

~ Philip Ariel’

ariel-2

I used my original name ‘Philip Verghese’ as my byline in my early writings.

A Few years later, after completing my high school education, I started sending letters, stories, and articles to secular publications under the new name Ariel Philip Valanjavattom’ (my native land near Thiruvalla, Kerala) and many of my writings were published in the newspapers, Children’s magazines and weeklies with the byline Valanjavattom Ariel (വളഞ്ഞവട്ടം എരിയൽ)

letterMy first writing (letters to the editor) with that name, got published in one of the most prestigious publications in India, “The Malayala Manorama” daily newspaper (The largest circulated daily, now it is the largest circulated regional language daily in India).

In addition to letter writing, many of my articles and stories were published in their children’s magazine called ‘Balarama’, which is a popular publication among Malayalam speaking children.

Later in the Malayala Manorama newspaper’s youth page “Yuvatharangam” I was a regular contributor with the pen name  ‘Ariel Philip’.

First, let me say a few words about what prompted me to write this content.

Yes, just after posting my previous content, “what is there in a name“.  I just started thinking about my own words, “Yes, next time when this question arises, “What’s there in a name?  Think about it, you will definitely find a lot in it”.

Those words echoed in my mind and I just thought of my own name “Ariel” and myself: Yes, there is a big story hidden behind it. Let me narrate that here in brief.

If my memory goes correct, it was, when I was studying in the seventh standard, our English class teacher (Susy Mathew) started taking a lesson from the English prose, Shakespeare’s famous drama “The Tempest” (Read more on that story in this link: summary of the Tempest story ) was the lesson for that day.

Ms. Susy Mathews explained the story’s summary and it was so interesting that everyone eagerly listened to it.

Later she asked the first bench row to read out the lesson, each of us got a different character to read, and very interestingly, I got the part of the story, an interesting character called ‘Ariel’ the good spirit.

The session was so interesting and all of us played our part well.

Later, when the class was over, everyone started calling me ‘Ariel’.

Since ‘Ariel’ was an important character in the drama ‘Tempest’ I too liked others calling me the name Ariel.

Slowly the name became famous in our school and everyone starts to talk about it, and the people around me called ‘Ariel Philip’.

Thus, born a new person by the name ‘Ariel Philip’.

From a very young age, I used to write articles, stories, songs, and poems in Christian weeklies and magazines in my mother tongue Malayalam.

Years went by and in connection with my further studies; I landed in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh (now in Telangana) where my elder sister and family stays.

l completed my post-graduate study in Journalism from here.

At a later stage, I came to know about the meaning of the word ‘Ariel’. Ariel means ‘Lion of God’.

I was so delighted to know the meaning and I decided to stick on to that byline in my further writings.

Now in my web writings, I use the name P V Ariel as my byline.

    Hello there!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the fascinating journey that led you to choose your pen name. It’s amazing how something as simple as a name can hold so much significance and meaning for a writer. Your story about your pen name’s inspiration and the connection to your love for nature is both touching and inspiring.

I particularly resonate with the idea that a pen name can provide a sense of creative freedom and the ability to express yourself in a unique way. It’s incredible how a well-chosen pseudonym can empower a writer to explore different genres, themes, and styles.
