Origin of Hashtag in Social Media

A hashtag is now used by millions on social media especially on twitter the micro-blogging social media platform. It is indeed very interesting to know the history of the origin of hashtag in social media.

Origin of Hashtag

Though it is all around the internet many are still do not know what it is. It is a word or phrase proceeded by a pound sign. # or a sharp note in musical notation. A tic tac toe board.

A hashtag is used in social media to draw the attention, to organize and to promote or to discuss a specific issue or any other relevant subjects or events. When this is arranged in a categorical way by online users on social media it is very easy to reach and discuss or participate in the event or conversation from wherever they are.

Life and growth of #hashtag

The interesting part is that many are still curious about the origin of the first hashtag and its growth.

The social media expert Chris Messina is the one who first comes up with a hashtag on twitter. He first posted the hashtag #barcamp in August 2007. The whole tweet appeared like this: ?how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]??

But the fact is that it existed under the alias “Octothorpe” long before Twitter was born, and it has recently risen to prominence as an easy way to insert yourself into any online conversation.

What a life history of hashtag you told. I didn’t know the etiquette of hashtags but now I understand when and where I use this in my twitter account. I really love to add hashtags but never do this before but now I can use hashtags in a correct way. Thanks for this article.

The real ephemerality of hashtags is what makes them simple as well as engaging to utilize in a fast-moving interaction tool on social media like Twitter, Pinterest, etc. Very informative post. Thanks for sharing. Nice to be on your website today. This is my first visit to your esteemed site. Very good, keep sharing.

Interesting and amusing post thanks. i had no idea about the history of hashtags. It’s just one of of those conventions that you sort of become aware of. But good to dig deeper into the meaning and origin.

    Philip,

I never thought of digging the history of a thing (#) that exponentially dominates social media arsenal. It’s quite exciting to know the path of # that travels. And now, it’s inevitable. It becomes a separate stream of marketing strategy though. #Hashtagmarketing. Thanks for bringing it to our notice Wrike.

Thanks for sharing this valuable post on the origin of hashtags. Well these days, Hashtags’ growth is stagnant on Instagram. This is why people started switching to SMM panels to boost their business online.
