A touching Christian reflection on human suffering, hidden pain, and the healing power of Jesus Christ.

At Philipscom Views, we often share inspiring words that touch the heart and lift the soul.

Today, I’m delighted to present a deeply moving reflection penned by my dear friend and brother in Christ, Brother George Mathew  Puthuppally — a renowned, gifted writer, journalist, and Gospel preacher.

Colored Pills and Hidden Pains
George Mathew

In this touching piece, he reflects on the reality of human suffering, the hidden pains behind our smiles, and the healing hope found only in our Lord Jesus Christ, who “heals all your diseases” (Psalm 103:3).

A Poem that Spoke to Many Hearts

A few years ago, my poem won the prize in a two-line poetry competition conducted by Malayala Manorama Weekly.
Here was the poem:

“Colored pills —
on their wheels,
roll the carts
of humankind.”

My poem, along with my photograph, was published in the Weekly, and the editor graciously sent me an honorarium.

The World Looks Healthy — But Is It?

Whenever I see large crowds, a single thought fills my heart — it feels like a vast assembly of patients.

Everyone appears well-dressed and smiling, pretending to be healthy.
When people meet, they exchange polite greetings, concealing the pain within.

Most survive on ten or fifteen pills a day.
For many, stopping those pills could mean the end of life itself.

When asked, “How are you?” we casually reply, “I’m fine.”
But truly — who among us is completely healthy?

 A Generation Bound by Pills

From the dawn of creation, humanity has struggled with sickness.
But perhaps no generation has been as sick as ours.

Diabetes and cancer have almost conquered the world.
To say, “I have a little sugar,” has even become fashionable!

People carry chocolates in their pockets, rush out of meetings or weddings to control their sugar levels — these scenes have become so common.

Once, a friend who looked perfectly healthy whispered to me:

“Brother, I take more than fifteen pills a day just to stay alive.”

H. G. Wells once wrote:

“No one you see is ever quite as you see them.”

And indeed — that’s true of so many around us.

Reflections from Life and Ministry

During a wedding I attended, I noticed several people quietly leaving the hall around noon.
One man said, “My sugar dropped, so I went out to eat a laddu.”
He returned, acting as if nothing had happened.

Those moments inspired my short poem again:

“Colored pills —
on their wheels,
roll the carts
of humankind.”

Another friend once said jokingly:

“If I ever go for a full check-up, they’ll find every disease in the world in me!
Why find out early and live in tension?
Let me live as long as I can, and when it’s time, let it happen.”

He too lives, pretending to be healthy — as do so many of us.

A Moment of Prayer

Once, while I was preaching at the Sharon Fellowship Convention in Thevalakkara, Kollam, the pastor read a prayer request:

“Please pray for Shaji, aged 45, suffering from a brain tumor. His wife has cancer. Both their children are also sick.”

My heart sank.
I prayed earnestly:

“Lord, an entire family is suffering from deadly diseases. Please heal them.”

Even in such pain, they live on — holding on to hope.
Were they not born for a purpose?

The Promise of Healing and Hope

Jesus said:

“In this world, you will have tribulations.
But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

John reminds us:

“Love for the world is enmity against God.
Whoever loves the world does not belong to Him.”

And St. Paul teaches:

“If we have food and clothing, let us be content with that.”

True contentment is far greater than prosperity.
What is the use of abundance without peace of mind?

 Only Christ Gives Real Peace

Life itself draws me to poetry and deep reflection.
Poor humanity! How many burdens we all carry — struggling to make ends meet.

How many will die with true peace and satisfaction?

Only Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, can give real peace.
He has gone ahead to prepare a heavenly home for us — a place without pain, sickness, or sorrow.

Jesus never lies.
He will surely come again — without delay — to take us home to heaven.

Until that day, let us live in this world of suffering and disease without losing hope.

“Jesus Christ heals all your diseases.”
(Psalm 103:3)

Closing Note from Philipscom Views

What a powerful and soul-stirring reflection!
Brother George Mathew’s words remind us of the fragility of life — and the preciousness of the hope we have in our Lord Jesus Christ, who alone offers true healing, peace, and eternal life.

Let us continue to trust in Him, serve others with compassion, and live with hearts full of gratitude and faith.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
