The pool of Bethesda today is ruined, but in Jesus’ day, it was a very special place. It was a pool located near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem where sick people would gather waiting for an opportunity to be healed. This man has been coming to the pool year after year in hopes of getting healed but because he can’t walk, he can never get to the water when it stirs. Jesus speaks to this man and asks him if he wants to be healed. Of course, the man says yes, and then Jesus tells him “Get up, take up your bed, and walk” (vs. 8). Without hesitation, the man gets up and walks away healed.
