Despite what people say, competition is good.

A market without competition signifies a stagnant one. As a result, there’s no money to be made there. Also, competitors help you understand the landscape of the industry. Finding out what they’re doing will help you develop your campaigns and strategies for your online business.

Therefore, you need to keep an eye on the competition by using competitor analysis tools.

According to this SEO checklist, you need competitor analysis to help you achieve the following:

  • Gather and analyze the respective link profiles of each site. It will help you understand their link building campaign and find low hanging fruit opportunities so you can boost your off-page SEO strategy.
  • Spy on competitors keywords. List down your competitors based on your target keywords. If you have a list of keywords you want to rank for, then all pages that appear on search results for those keywords are your competitors.
  • Compare and contrast your performance against the competition. See if your efforts are making a positive impact on your SEO campaign. Are you able to gather more backlinks and move up the search result with your current strategy in place? How about your competitors?

The points above are features that the best competitor analysis tools can do for you. If you’re looking to shore up your SEO campaign, then you need to perform competitor research correctly using the tools below:

Competitor analysis tools you shouldn’t live without

One of the pioneers of competitor analysis tools for SEO, Spyfu remain just as valuable even more than ever. It helps you spy on your best competitor’s SEO and PPC campaigns so you can find out their tricks of the trade. You can perform keyword research and backlink analysis, both of which are also crucial factors in your SEO campaign. There’s also a backlinks outreach feature so you can find link building opportunities and reach out to the site owners from Spyfu instead of using another tool.

Spyfu is also one of the more affordable tools in the market. For $39/month, you can perform unlimited searches for competitors and keywords. However, there is a limit to the domain contacts that you can reach out to using the tool.

Despite the great features that make Spyfu a highly recommended tool, you are only limited to searching the US and UK databases in your research. If you want to find accurate information from search engine databases outside from both counties, then you’re out of luck with Spyfu.

Monitor Backlinks

Monitor Backlinks makes backlink management and research a breeze. Upon signing up for a premium account, enter your site’s URL and let the tool find your backlinks. You can also track your competitor’s backlinks in real time. Whenever they acquire a backlink, you are alerted via email. You can then analyze the backlinks they’ve acquired over time and look for patterns to help you figure out the kind of link building campaign they’re running.

The tool also lets you keep track of your site’s position on search engine results page (SERP). Get weekly updates from Monitor Backlinks regarding the progress of your site’s keyword ranking.

Serpstat is a comprehensive SEO tool that can do competitor analysis for you and then some. However, the tool is useful enough specifically for spying on your competitor keyword and website traffic.

Upon entering your competitor’s URL on the search bar, you can immediately see the keywords they’re ranking for in order, pages with the highest visibility based on their keywords they’re ranking for in organic search, keyword position distribution, and more. You can also compare your site to your competitors to see how well you’re faring against them. From here, you can also view missing keywords that their sites are ranking for and your site isn’t. You can use the data to create better content than the existing pages of your competitors so you can rank higher than them.

Other features other competitive research includes website audit, rank tracker, check competitor website traffic, and backlink analysis. All of these aim to provide you with a comprehensive toolset to take your SEO to the next level.

iSpionage is similar to Spyfu as both are primarily competitor analysis tools. However, this tool specializes in spying on the PPC campaigns of your competitors,

Upon entering the URL of a site on the software, you will see its SEO traffic value, top organic keywords from Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, top organic competitors, and more. You can group organic keywords that are ranking to a page on your site or competitor’s so you can understand which keywords are bringing in the most traffic.

Under the PPC Campaign tab, you will see the keywords that the site is using as part of its PPC strategy. You will see the number of ads running for the keyword, its Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI), average search volume, and average search position of the ads, among others.

Unlike the competitor analytics tools, Awario helps you track and monitor your keyword mentions across different online channels in real time. Enter the keyword or URL you want to track, and the tool will help you locate places online (social media, blogs, online forums) where people mentioned and linked out to them.

Aside from monitoring your brand, you can use the tool to track the websites you’re up against. Enter the keyword and URL you want to monitor so you can find social media mentions and link building opportunities you can leverage later on.
