Breaking News The Blog Is Dead

Breaking News! The Blog Is Dead?

This is indeed a Breaking News. But Bloggers, please do not get shocked by reading the title!

No! The Blog is not dead, but it is equally dead!

Now let me put it in another way: “The Blog Is Not Dead but it’s down!”

The so-called “Dead” or “Down” thing or story is a BIG story in itself!

Just a few days back yet another death happened in the family of Google Its prestigious social media platform a competitor to Facebook, Google Plus is dead.

Yes, death is inevitable and it happens in and around us on a daily basis.  But the death of such platforms will surely give much pain to its millions of users.

Philipscom Web Page Was Down (Dead) For Four Days

For almost four days my web page has disappeared from the light of the world!

Or let me put it this way:  “The web page was not visible on the World Wide Web!”

Yes, it went down!  This happens sometimes due to some technical errors with the hosting platforms.

The technical word that the bloggers or the web hosters give to this phenomenon is “This Page is Down” or some say”  “It is under maintenance, Try sometime later”

But some hosters put this in a very sad way:  “This page is suspended

There are many reasons for this down thing or whatever you call it!  I am not going into the details of that issue.

Or, since I am a newbie in these technical aspects I can’t explain it further in a blog post like this!   This post is a different subject which comes up in my mind just a few days back!

The other day I read an article about how to get traffic or attention to your old posts?

And the writer said:  “If your blog page is filled with a number of posts there is every chance that those old posts go down the pit and nobody, not even the author may look into it or give attention to it.”

My thought went wild on that particular statement, Oh my… I have nearly 1000+ posts on my site and I need to give some kind of life to the old posts. Otherwise, many, especially our new contacts or visitors may not know about those posts.  Sometimes that may be worth reading than the latest ones.

So I decided to do some re-purposing process with some of my archive posts.  And the thought of starting from the Alphabet “A” thus I did some polishing job to one of the old posts titled: Here Comes “Ariel” The Knol Author Now A Blogger….   Just after doing the polishing job I posted a notification about this updated post on my Facebook wall that I generally do whenever a post goes live.

Ariel the Google's Knol Author now a blog author via pvariel.com Click To Tweet

Immediately I received a mail-in my comment box from one of my esteemed readers!

She is, in fact, a recent online friend on my page! She is a curious reader too!  Reading the title of the post she is more curious about the word “Knol” and she expressed her anxiety in her comment.  I explained to her through my reply comment to some extent.

The Breaking News Is This:  “The Blog Is Not Dead But The Knol Is Dead”

Google’s Knol Story – A Bit Of It

This incident made me think again about the sad demise of Google’s Knol.  Yes, the blog is not dead, but the KNOL is dead!

Again coming to the word “KNOL, it’s new to many of my new friends’.   But it is an old word Google coined for its wonderful platform.  ‘KNOL’ is the short form of ‘knowledge’.   That was indeed a knowledge-sharing platform.

Google started this amazing platform with much enthusiasm and in fact, many of the famous authors, scientists, doctors, philosophers and many intellectuals gathered in this platform to share their knowledge in their respective fields. In the initial stage, it was flourishing like a big knowledge tree!

The blog is not dead, but the KNOL is...Read @ pvariel.com Click To Tweet

They planned to develop it exactly like Wikipedia and that was going on well with lots of contents added to the platform every day.

Famous authors and intellectuals were the main users of that platform, hot discussions and debates were going on with its users and everyone thought that it will surely beat Wikipedia.

But sad to say Google decided to shut that shop after running for almost two years.

The reason they said is a scarcity of staff to manage such a huge platform. Maybe the income flow too was not that they expected.

Anyways, to tell you the truth, that was a wonderful platform I came across with many online friends.

In fact,  this platform a paved way for me to develop my hidden talents. The users, though they were high profile writers and researchers they were very co-operative and helpful.

I still have contact and relationship with many of them.  Two of my knol posts on Philately and Tree won knol awards. It is mentioned in the sidebar of my knol page,  to see that please Click on the above screenshot and expand it to read.

Though Google did shut the door, fortunately, all our contents they saved and made arrangements to migrate it to the WordPress platform.

They had a tie-up with WordPress and allowed its authors to migrate it to WP or Blogger.com or other platforms.

A few years back that was a serious discussion on the pages of many other similar platforms and social media.

In short, that shutting down made me start my own blogs.  “A blessing in disguise”.   I wrote this information because of your curiosity to know what “KNOL” is.

I am sure many of my new friends here too do not know what knol is! So this brief information will give an idea.

You can read more about Knol at this link: PVAriel The Knol Author   And More  HERE

While writing this post I received yet another notification via Google+ in that Ryan Hanley the famous blogger mentioned about this serious subject in one of his Facebook notification.

Yes, the ‘blog death’ can happen at any time if you are using a rented platform!

For example, take the case of Google’s Knol platform and its premature death (mentioned above).

That was indeed a great headache to many of its users.  In fact, all of its users were in a dilemma after hearing Google’s decision to wind up the platform.

This type of death occurred not only to Knol but to various other platforms too, even from Google and various other social media platforms which disappeared within a short span of its creation.

Google’s own ‘Orkut’ buzz and various other platforms are fitting examples of this phenomenon.

So if we use a rented platform for our contents there is a chance of disappearance or death!

However, if we are on our own land it won’t get ruined instead we can do some maintenance and bring it to restoration.

Blog death’ can happen at any time if you are using a rented platform.via pvariel.com Click To Tweet

Yes, even if it faces some kind of calamity we can definitely fix it! (Example this page faced one such phenomenon recently as mentioned above) So beware of using rented platforms for a long time.

In fact, it is a wonderful medium to share our feelings or for that matter, anything you prefer that can be kept open to the public or we can keep it as only for a secluded group or community.

Though in the beginning blogging started as a passion or hobby, slowly the business community took note of the vast marketing opportunities hidden within and now they occupy a major part of it.

Take the case of any business firms’ (small or big),  though they have different websites they will be creating a separate blog page to get in touch with their clients instantly and also to inform about the latest developments, product or resource launch.

In short,  as long as the industries or the business firms prevail so long will the blogs stay or live.

Also, see the infographic below: It gives an amazing statistic about the present blogging arena!

A Statistic On Blogs

  3. Hi Philip

It feels good to be back here on your blog after my 6 week blogging break. The title of this post caught my attention and I am glad that I was able to read it.

It is very insightful and I am glad to know that we both agree blogging is not dead and it is here to stay. So many of us have done great writing and have some of the best content but so true once they go into the archive no one really remembers them, including us the writer.

I have freshened up a post or two in the past and reblogged them just because I thought them to be so valuable and that my new readers needed to know about them.

Thanks for the inspiration. Great job. Have a blessed weekend. :-)

  8. Hey Philip,

I’ve heard of Knol before. I believe it was from one of your blog posts, but I never participated in it.

But you’re right. It’s to your advantage to start your own blog which is coined “A Self Hosted Blog” versus the free ones because you never know when the doors will be shut.

I was curious about the title. I thought you were going to give up on blogging LOL.. I should’ve known better.

The video was interesting. There’s a huge difference between the blogosphere back in 2006 versus the blogosphere now. It was a lot more simpler and you could get away with a lot of stuff. By the time I came into the blogging game, that’s when things started to drastically change. It was confusing and frustrating for me at first, but I was able to adjust well to it.

Thanks for sharing Philip! Have a great week ahead!

  10. Hi Philip,

I never heard the term KNOL until now. My goodness thankfully I never went that way. I always believed in having my own self hosted blog rather than rented space.

So many things changed over the years since I started blogging. Google hit many of my friends with one thing or another. This is why I don’t like to depend on any rented space…even social sites. They are there, and they are wonderful to use, but you never know if they will go away.

Love that infographic! When you think of how many blogs there are and how efficient it works for purchasing it is mind blowing!

  11. Hi Philip,

Interesting article, thanks – I didn’t know what “knol” was. You make a good point about using a self-hosted site. Before I knew better I wasted several good articles on “rented” space that either is no more, or kept getting taken down merely because I hadn’t changed what was actually “evergreen” information. Thank goodness someone enlightened me about self-hosted WordPress.

To keep my old blog posts alive I use the free plugin “Revive Old Post”, formerly “Tweet Old Post” – although this isn’t without “dangers” as sometimes I see a totally irrelevant post “revived”. Fortunately there is an option to stop that in the plugin.

Enjoy the rest of your week, Joy

  12. “Yes, the blog is not dead, but the KNOL is dead!” Boy, I had forgotten all about Knol. I had never used it, so I did not really notice the difference when it went away.

    Hi Philip

This is a great content and I love the concept of your title.

You are so right about using a rented space for content. This has a disadvantage as one can lose all his work to such platform. I have never knew about KNOL but I do love the way you use that experience to portray your point.

    Thanks for sharing. Take Care

Thank you so much for your kind presence on my page again. :-)
Yes, a rented space is indeed a rented space and anything can happen to it at any time LOL
It has its own advantages and more disadvantages.
Yes, Knol was a wonderful platform from Google, but sad it disappeared in few years time.
Thanks again for the kind visit and for the insightful feedbac.

  15. Hello Phillip,

I remember Knol. I never used it though. This reminds me of the Squidoo situation. I had some lenses with them and they moved them to Hubpages so, I didn’t lose my content. I think sites like Knol and Squidoo are good for if you want to write content that does not pertain to your blog posts. Sometimes you want to write about different topics but you don’t want to change the niche of your blog. Plus, it can be hard to maintain many blogs with many different topics. Plus, everyone doesn’t want the responsibility of a blog. I believe that if you plan on doing business you need a blog. It all depends upon your needs.

Knol and Squidoo really weren’t considered blogs. They were more like pages. Some people who used Squidoo and Know already had blogs they just used them to get more traffic to their blogs.

Thanks for sharing this with us!

What a joy to see you here again after a gap. :-)
      Hope you are doing well.
Yes, Knol, Squidoo, AC (Associated Content) – now managed by Yahoo are of course not blog pages but platforms.
Nice to know that you know about KNOL but never used. Good, that was indeed a great initiative by Google to develop an alternative to Wikiepedia, but due to various reasons they could not continue it and the closed its door.

Yes, blogs are an unavoidable or an essential part for any business, these days almost all business org keep a blog to update about their products and other resources. It can easily convey the current developments via blog than a web page.
Sorry Maketta for the late response to your valuable insight.
      Keep sharing
      May have a great day

  16. Hi Phil,

Wow! A blog every half second? And most die in the graveyard. So happy you’re up and running again and that you’re dispelling the silly notion that blogging is dying. No way. It’s growing, and it’s never been better, especially when you’re connecting with inspired folks like yourself PV.

  18. Hi Brother Phil,

I am late here with the comment. Actually, I wrote a comment on this post from my mobile but due to some reason, it does not show up here. I think the loss of connectivity in my mobile was the problem. Anyway, good to see this post and the catchy title.

Regarding blogging, I don’t think it will disappear from the scene ever. But it will change its form in one way or the other. For example, In future, most of the blogs may have its equivalent in the form of apps and a blog without an app may be considered as an unimportant one.

Also, I was not aware of the “Knol” pages you mentioned in the post. Good to have some information about that now.

Hoping to read more posts soon.

    Keep Sharing.

    Have a great blogging journey.

Yes, blogging and blog activities are not going to die, instead it will continue in some for or other
as you mentioned its now the time for Apps. everything thru Apps. Yes, as you said if we are not
moving with the trend ours will become an outdated one LOL
So lets update our things with the current trends!!! :-)

    Hey Philip,

I had seen the title of this post and got pretty curious as to what it had to say. I really enjoyed the statistics from the infographics. It is always so fascinating with so many people out there wanting their bit of internet attention. The short film certainly nailed the idea of sticking to a niche and knowing your audience. Something that I have long struggled with but have come to terms with in the sense that I am going to do it my way. I am here for the long haul, if it takes me a little longer to generate an audience that is not confused by my style then so be it.

But I am rather glad blogging is not dead, I have just arrived and am no where near wanting to look for something else that may interest me.

I am glad you sorted out KNOL for me. Before my time. And can I just say well done – 700 posts is an amazing amount. Really enjoyed the post. Thank you.

    Rachel.
