Finally, after many hesitations and second thoughts, you’ve decided to create a blog. Congratulations, and welcome to the wonderful world of bloggers!

First, breathe, sit down and stay concentrated: it is not yet time to appeal the jump on the keyboard and start writing.

In this article, we will cover three very important aspects for those who, like you and like me, decided to start the magnificent journey online.

So here are three essential tips to start on the right foot and create a successful blog.

Erik's 3 Essential Steps to start a successful blog, @philipscom @ pvariel Click To Tweet

1. Your Target in One Sentence

Your blog or website should have a goal: one, simple, clear and accessible.

Through your blog, you could sell a product or service about a field you are expert about.

Whatever your goal is, it should be summarized in one sentence.

This phrase is called “unique value proposition” and to be able to create it, you have to consider that the readers need to understand the topic of your website in a few seconds.

We can define the unique value proposition as your motto (it’s commonly known as site tagline). This is also what your audience will see when searching your blog with Google.

Here are some examples that particularly work, in my opinion:

paypal-earningsPayPal: “Send Money, Pay Online or Set Up a Merchant Account”

Simple, right? Even those unfamiliar with PayPal, automatically realize what features are on the site.

spotify-com-newsSpotify: “Music is for everyone!”

An effective and magnetic phrase, which remains etched and invites the user to enter the service. Besides, who does not like music?

Evernote: “Capture what’s on your mind”

Another great example of a catchy sentence.

What is Evernote?

A service that helps you organize your work and your life.

evernote2Jot down anything and keep it in a safe place to use it later at any time from anywhere.  Evernote helps you to do this.

So, as you may have understood, the unique value proposition is the promise of what the users will find on your blog or site.

Write an original and honest sentence, because a promise must be kept, if you want to create a successful blog and be credible on the web.

2. Choose the Right Domain Name

internet browserOnce you have located the target, the next step is to choose the domain name (for example www.pvariel.com).

Creating a successful blog also passes from here, because the domain name is critical to the success of your web project.

There are two questions you should ask yourself before choosing your domain name:

  • Should it be relevant to your business?
  • Which extension must have?

If you’re aiming to personal branding – or the promotion of your services through your blog – your best bet is to use your full name.

It may happen that this has already been bought by your namesake, then you can try to choose a different extension from the classic ones (like .net, .org, .biz).

For all the other cases, there is not a general rule, it much depends on personal taste.

Here are some examples to understand the guidelines that you should consider to choose the domain name of your site or blog.

The domain name coincides with that of the brand, no misunderstanding.

The domain name includes a long-tail keyword. In other words, you can easily understand what the website is about.

It is not clear what the company is about or the topic, but the name remains in the mind, no doubt.

What approach do you think is the best to create a successful blog?

The simplest and most important advice I can give you is:

Choose a domain name that is easy to write and, above all, to remember.

Choose a domain name that is easy to write and remember, writes Erik Emanuelli @philipscom Click To Tweet

3. Focus on a Specific Topic

maxresdefault-youtube-comTo create a blog that works it’s essential to not be dispersive: everything must revolve around a central topic.

The more specific the topic, the more incisive is the result.

For example, you can create a cooking blog, but it could be more effective if you just talk about desserts.

Or, you can create a technology blog, but you can increase the chances of being successful talking only about smartphones.

And so on. The aim here is to choose a niche inside a niche.

Those who enter into your blog expect certain answers to specific questions. And you exactly have to deliver them.

All this is important for two reasons:

  • You create a niche of users
  • Search engines love this approach

Now, think about the following.

If you have a restaurant in New York and try to emerge on the web, how many chances do you think you have to be in the top positions of Google?

Instead, if you have a restaurant in New York that offers a vegan menu, users searching for this type of food will probably find your restaurant at the top.

In a crowded marketplace like the web, you can win if you are able to find a niche.

Create a successful blog: Now You Can!

Considering those points, and after taking these essential steps, you will be ready to create a blog, and you can finally start writing your first article.

I hope these tips will help you reach success in the online world.

What do you think?

Anything to add?

Hey Erik and Philip,

Creating a successful blog takes a lot of time and effort. But most of the newbies give it a try for a few months and then back off.

The points mentioned by Erik are awesome. It’s necessary to have a perfect niche. The domain name should consist the keyword.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Erik Emanuelli

Hi Ravi,
that’s right.

It really takes years and lots of hours of work to build a successful blog.
I see so many domain names of people who started a site and then leaves just after months, or even weeks.

The online business seems easy, but it’s really hard!

Thanks for sharing your views and glad you liked my contribution here.

Hi Erik,

Great to see you here on Philip’s blog.

It isn’t easy to create a successful blog but you have given true-to -life details of how to do so. Finding that perfect niche that we will never tire of, to making sure the name of the blog is what we want people to search for is so important.

It is so true…many people jump into blogging and then fizzle out within less than a year. It does take stamina and a pure interest in order to have success with your blog.

Great advice!

Erik Emanuelli

Hi Donna,
good to see you too.

For me, it’s all about perseverance and patience, with a good daily work.

Hi Philip and Erik. This is indeed something that all of us who have blogs have wrestled with. I’m glad to see that you have not only addressed how to create a blog, but also what it should be about. It works a lot better if you know your niche, and create a blog to write what you know about your niche. Good post, and I hope to read more from you on how to be a better blogger.

Erik Emanuelli

Hello Anand,
thanks for the positive feedback.

Sherab Tenzin

Hi Erik & Philip,

Good list of tips indeed. Newbies will really find it helpful. When I opened my blog, I didn’t know the importance of domain name having my niche-related keyword. I landed up giving a random domain that my host said it available-how I wished I knew this before!

Thanks. I won’t repeat this mistake when I open my second website. Now I can also help some of my friends on this.

Erik Emanuelli

Hello Sherab,
glad to know you found the post useful.
I hope the tips included here are going to help more bloggers too.

Hi Erik and Brother Phil,

I am a little bit late here in this blog but happy to see Erik sharing three very essential tips for the success of a blog. Actually, the first two steps are easy to follow but the third step of focussing on a particular topic seems to be the hardest part for many bloggers. I hope to read more tips from Erik in future too. Have a great time Erik and thanks Brother Phil for introducing Erik to your readers.

Best regards

Reji Stephenson

Erik Emanuelli

Hello Reji,
thanks for the thumbs up.

I hope to get invited soon again to post for Phil blog. 🙂

Hi Erik,
When I created my first blog domain named gosview.com. I have used Shopify domain name idea generator tool which is the most powerful domain name generator I think.
But your tips overall excellent, Thanks for sharing your valuable information.

Erik Emanuelli

Hello Palashtd,
that’s a short domain name and also brandable.
Great start, man!

Minuca Elena

Hi Philip and Erik,

So nice that you worked together for this guest post. I think that finding the right domain name is a step usually ignored by newbies. I would recommend buying a domain name with your name or with something very relevant to your niche. Also, the bests sites are .com, .net or .org.

Tweeting this post!

Cheers guys,

Erik Emanuelli

Hi Minuca,
thanks for your suggestions and for your support.
I appreciate the share. 🙂

Hello Erik,

Another informative article from you 🙂 It is very important to choose which topic to cover in blogging and then choosing a domain is so important too. Most of the people ignore this important point and choice domains with number, hyphens and other fancy things. Thanks for sharing this article and have a great day!
